Former professional ice hockey player and popular TSN 1200 radio personality, Shawn Simpson has passed away at the age of 56.
Shawn’s tragic death by suicide on January 29, 2025, has left the Ottawa sports community and his many fans in mourning. Born on August 10, 1968, Simpson had a remarkable career both on and off the ice. As a talented goaltender, he gained recognition early in his career, leading to his selection in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.
Chosen 60th overall by the Washington Capitals, Simpson was the first goaltender selected that year. He made a name for himself in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), earning First-Team All-Star honors in 1987. That same year, he represented Canada in the World Junior Championship but was part of the infamous “Punch-up in Piestany,” a bench-clearing brawl with the Soviet Union that led to the team’s disqualification.
Although his NHL career didn’t unfold as expected, Simpson played in various professional leagues before transitioning into hockey operations. He later took on front-office roles with the Washington Capitals and the Toronto Maple Leafs, contributing to team management and scouting efforts. His deep knowledge of the game made him a key figure behind the scenes in player development.
Following his time in hockey operations, Simpson became a well-loved media personality, joining TSN 1200 in Ottawa. His sharp wit, deep hockey insight, and engaging presence made him a favorite among fans and colleagues.
His passing is a significant loss to the hockey world, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
