On February 26, 2013, a horrifying discovery shocked the Bronx community when a dog walker found human remains scattered across garbage bags on East 158th Street and Eagle Avenue in the Melrose neighborhood. The remains belonged to 45-year-old Tanya Marie Byrd, a beloved home health aide known for her kindness. Her dismembered body, found across four blocks in Morrisania, was later identified as that of Byrd, who had been violently killed in her Westchester Avenue apartment just days earlier.

    What Happened

Tanya Byrd, a single mother of three, was last seen alive on February 24, 2013, around 10 p.m. Little did anyone know, her life would be cut short by a brutal and senseless act of violence. Byrd had been stabbed once in the neck, killed, and then dismembered with a power saw. Her body parts were stuffed into separate garbage bags and dumped along the streets of the Bronx using a shopping cart.

Byrd’s younger children, including a 7-year-old son with Down syndrome, were left without their mother. Known affectionately as “Miss Tanya” for her nurturing spirit and dedication as a caregiver, her death left a deep void in the lives of those who loved her.

    The Investigation and Arrests

Suspicion quickly fell on Byrd’s 23-year-old son, Bahsid McLean, who had lived with her and had a history of petty theft and violent outbursts. On McLean’s phone, investigators discovered a chilling selfie that sent shockwaves through the community. The photo showed McLean grinning beside his mother’s severed head in their blood-spattered bathroom, taken shortly after the murder.

McLean initially blamed an ex-boyfriend for the crime, but later implicated his friend William Harris, a 26-year-old handyman. Harris admitted to helping McLean dismember and dispose of the body, claiming that McLean had stabbed Byrd during an argument over rent, and then forced him to assist with the cleanup. Harris confessed to using a saw and gloves bought nearby to help with the grisly task.

Family Tensions and Mental Health Struggles

Neighbors of the family noted McLean’s untreated schizophrenia, which had contributed to a history of violent behavior and strained family dynamics. Byrd’s younger children recalled their mother’s fears of McLean’s temper, with one neighbor saying Byrd had frequently expressed concerns about her son’s volatility.

    The Legal Outcome

On February 28, 2013, Bahsid McLean was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and body desecration. William Harris was arrested and charged with tampering and disposing of the body. In 2014, McLean pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Harris received a 10-year sentence for his role in the crime.

Byrd’s funeral in 2013 was attended by hundreds, who celebrated her as a devoted caregiver and a loving mother. The tragic case, particularly the disturbing selfie, sparked public outcry and led to calls for better mental health resources in the Bronx. The devastating event also left a legacy of grief but led to the establishment of a scholarship in Byrd’s name to honor her memory and dedication to caring for others.
