Free Sports Program Offers Young People a Positive Path in Swindon

Swindon, Wiltshire – A sports program is providing free activities for young people, giving them a safe and healthy way to spend their time. Premier League (PL) Kicks has been offering free football sessions in Swindon for six years. Recently, they expanded their program to include other sports like netball, basketball, tennis, tag rugby, and badminton.

Organizers say that this variety has attracted more young women and girls to participate. The program aims to give young people a “positive outlet” and keep them engaged in constructive activities.

Philip Wilkinson, the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), believes that these kinds of programs are very important. He says they help keep young people away from negative behaviors and help them grow into responsible citizens.

At Foundation Park, up to 160 young people, between the ages of 10 and 18, are taking part in these free activities with PL Kicks.

Andy Tye, the coordinator of the program, explained that the activities are designed around what the young people are interested in. This ensures that they feel in control of their sessions and want to keep coming back.

“We’ve tried to include every sport we can throughout the week, and it’s been growing stronger and stronger,” Tye said. “We believe that offering these free activities, along with our amazing team of coaches, gives these young kids a positive way to spend their time.”

Tye also mentioned that he is very happy to see more girls joining and working with the coaches. He believes this is very important for the organization.

Amelia and Evie, both 10 years old, said they joined because of the many different sports offered. They enjoy staying healthy and using their energy in a good way.

Noah, who is 11, described the new multi-sport sessions as “fun.” He said it’s a great chance to practice and get better at sports.

PL Kicks is supported by funding from the PCC and the Premier League.

PCC Wilkinson said that being involved in organized group activities teaches young people to be respectful, responsible, and caring.

“This generation has gone through Covid, which isolated them and made them more likely to face unhealthy and dangerous pressures,” he said. “Getting them involved in team sports is a great way to bring them back into society.”

Wilkinson added that sports are a great way to give young people positive activities to focus on. The program hopes to continue to expand and reach even more young people in the community. By offering a variety of sports and a supportive environment, PL Kicks is making a real difference in the lives of young people in Swindon.
