LONDON (AP) – A new television series is taking a fresh look at the classic stories of Agatha Christie, one of the most beloved mystery writers of all time. But this isn’t your grandmother’s Christie. The show, titled “Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence,” dares to bring her characters into the 21st century, complete with smartphones and social media.
Set to premiere next year, this six-part drama explores how timeless tales of intrigue and suspense can play out in a world vastly different from the one Christie originally imagined. While some may worry about tampering with tradition, the show’s creators insist they’re approaching the project with respect and care.
Writer and executive producer Phoebe Eclair-Powell explained that they sought permission from Christie’s estate and are committed to ensuring that modern technology doesn’t cheapen the intricate puzzles that are a hallmark of Christie’s work. Instead, the aim is to enhance the stories, using technology sparingly and only when it adds a new layer of depth.
“We have used it, but carefully, sparingly, and when we think actually that it’s enhanced the original story that it’s adapted from,” explains Eclair-Powell.
While other countries have experimented with modernizing Christie’s characters, this is the first time an English-speaking production has attempted such a feat. This adds a layer of significance to the project, as it brings the stories back to their roots while reimagining them for a new generation.

The series stars Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan as the titular Tommy and Tuppence. Thomas hopes the modernized setting will attract viewers who might typically shy away from traditional period dramas. Dylan describes the new adaptation as having a “looseness” and “freshness” that sets it apart.

For those unfamiliar with the characters, Tommy and Tuppence are a pair of amateur sleuths who first appeared in Christie’s stories in 1922 and continued to evolve alongside the author until 1973. In this updated version, Tommy is a crime writer, while Tuppence is an actress. Their relationship is marked by a playful tension, adding a romantic element to the mysteries they solve.
Imelda Staunton also stars in the series as Tommy’s Aunt Ada. Production is ongoing, and the show is expected to air in 2026. “Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence” promises to be a fascinating experiment in adapting classic literature for a modern audience. It remains to be seen whether it will capture the hearts of longtime Christie fans while also attracting new viewers, but the attempt is sure to spark conversation about the balance between tradition and innovation in storytelling.
As we look forward to this new series, it’s important to remember the values that made Agatha Christie’s stories so enduring in the first place: a focus on individual responsibility, a belief in justice, and a celebration of human ingenuity. These are the timeless themes that resonate across generations and cultures, and it’s essential that any adaptation, no matter how modern, stays true to these core principles.
