Kenner, Louisiana Businesses Feel the Strain as Immigration Enforcement Increases
Kenner, Louisiana, a city with a large Hispanic population, is seeing some businesses struggle as federal authorities increase immigration enforcement. Some worry that these actions are hurting the local economy.
Carmela Diaz, who owns a local taco restaurant, had to close her doors. She says fewer customers are coming because they are afraid to leave their homes.
Federal vehicles have been seen driving through Kenner as the Department of Homeland Security carries out its latest operation. Similar actions have taken place in other cities.
Local Police Chief Keith Conley supports the federal efforts, saying they are helping to address crime. He says some violent crimes have involved individuals who entered the U.S. illegally. He also mentioned issues with unlicensed and uninsured drivers who are in the country illegally.
State Senator Kirk Talbot believes the federal operation will ultimately benefit Kenner. He stated that those who are here illegally and have criminal records should be caught and deported.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the operations target violent offenders. They stated that recent arrests included individuals with records of serious crimes.
Some residents worry about the impact on families and the potential for abuse by federal agents. However, supporters of the increased enforcement hope it will lead to a safer community for everyone.
