    CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — A North Carolina man died Friday evening when his car, traveling the wrong way on Dover Road, ran a red light near the North Liberty Church Road intersection and struck three vehicles — injuring six others. The development rattled a quiet stretch just outside Clarksville, leaving families shaken and roads blocked as first responders worked into the night.

    At around 5:14 p.m., a 2011 Honda Fit driven by 56-year-old David Johnson of North Carolina barreled westbound on Dover Road — the wrong way, state troopers say — before careening through a red light at the busy intersection. Three vehicles were stopped there: a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, a 2020 Nissan Kicks, and a 2016 Nissan Versa. Witnesses described a sudden, terrifying impact.


    Johnson first sideswiped the Malibu before striking both the Nissan Kicks and the Versa. The force of the crash left the Honda mangled at the center of the chaos. Troopers later confirmed Johnson was not wearing a seat belt, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

    In the Malibu was a 16-year-old girl, who — remarkably — survived without injury, thanks in part to her seat belt. In the Nissan Kicks, a 19-year-old woman was driving with three passengers — another 19-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl, and a 13-year-old boy. All were wearing seat belts; all suffered injuries. Meanwhile, in the Versa, a 19-year-old woman and an infant girl were also hurt, though both had been buckled.

    By nightfall, local authorities confirmed one fatality and six injured. Some victims were transported to nearby hospitals; others awaited transport depending on the severity of their injuries. Conditions remain unreported as of the latest dispatch.

    The crash forced closure of Dover Road at the North Liberty Church Road intersection for hours. Emergency crews, night traffic, and flashing lights painted a grim scene — neighbors and passersby drawn in by the hush that sometimes follows sudden tragedy.

    Officials from Tennessee Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation. Investigators say they are examining all factors, including possible impairment, mechanical issues, and whether seat-belt use (or the lack thereof) contributed to the severity.
