A father of seven from Clarksville, Tennessee, was among two victims tragically shot and killed in a late-night domestic violence incident in Birmingham, Alabama. The shooting, which occurred inside a Birmingham apartment, has left a family grieving as they struggle to understand the events that led to the loss of two beloved members.

Sonny Arrington, 43, and Carlton Rufus Allen, 76, were fatally shot late Saturday evening in what authorities are calling a senseless act of violence. The pair were part of a large, close-knit family who had gathered at the Tuxedo Terrace apartment complex following the funeral of 29-year-old Ja’Oree Marquel Brown-Allen, who had been killed in a shooting the week before. The family, already reeling from their loss, was in the middle of a barbecue when tragedy struck once again.

Just before 11:30 p.m., gunfire rang out, leaving both victims dead at the scene and one family member severely injured. The suspect, identified as a 26-year-old woman who is Arrington’s niece and Allen’s great-niece, was arrested a few hours later in Bessemer. She is currently being held at the Birmingham City Jail on capital murder charges, as police believe the shooting was a result of an internal family dispute.

Multiple shots were fired into the apartment from outside, according to preliminary reports from investigators. Officers from Birmingham’s West Precinct arrived to find the two victims dead and the wounded sister, who is expected to survive, in critical condition. The injuries of the sister were later confirmed to be non-life-threatening by doctors at UAB Hospital.

Birmingham Police Department spokesperson Officer Truman Fitzgerald noted that the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear. “We don’t yet know what sparked the argument, but what we do know is that this was a large, closely connected family,” Fitzgerald said, speaking to the deep ties within the group. The shooting marks a painful chapter in a city that has now recorded its 78th and 79th homicides of the year.

Despite the unsettling circumstances, law enforcement agencies acted swiftly to apprehend the suspect. A tip-off from the public led to her location in Bessemer, where she was arrested around two hours after the shooting occurred. Fitzgerald praised the collaboration between local police forces, saying, “A capital murder suspect being taken into custody within two hours of the shooting speaks to the focus and dedication of our officers.”

Arrington, who leaves behind his wife Candace and their seven children, is remembered by family members as a loving and devoted father. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support his family, particularly his widow and children, during this difficult time. Friends and relatives have described him as “kind and compassionate,” someone who was always there for his loved ones.

The family had just endured another heartbreaking loss with the death of Ja’Oree Marquel Brown-Allen, who was fatally shot in Fairfield the previous week. As the investigation into the shooting continues, the community is left grappling with the tragedy of losing two cherished individuals in such a violent and incomprehensible way.
