WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A dark pall fell over North Forsyth High School and its community Tuesday after a stabbing around 11 a.m. left one student dead and another injured. The attack prompted an immediate, heavy law-enforcement response and forced the school into lockdown as authorities scrambled to piece together what happened.

At approximately 11:05 a.m., the school resource officer issued an urgent “all hands on deck” call. Deputies from Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Winston‑Salem Police Department descended on the campus within minutes. By the time they arrived, what had begun as a student altercation had escalated into tragedy.

Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough told reporters that the violence involved two students, and confirmed there had been a “loss of life.” The injured student was taken to a hospital, treated, and later released, authorities said.

The identity of the deceased student — and the suspect, if any — has not been released. Officials cited an ongoing investigation and said questions would not be entertained at this time.

Don Phipps, who only began his role as the district superintendent last week, described the tragedy as “the worst nightmare of any educator.” He announced the school will remain closed Wednesday, and a crisis response team is being mobilized to support students, staff, and families when classes resume.

Meanwhile, Josh Stein, governor of North Carolina, described the incident on social media as “shocking and horrible,” offering his condolences and prayers for the families and the broader school community.

So far, law-enforcement officials have not disclosed what sparked the fight — whether it was personal, gang-related, or otherwise. They also urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic footage, out of respect for the victim and the grieving community. The investigation remains active as officials gather evidence, witness testimonies, and any surveillance video from the school.
