GULFPORT, Miss. — A quiet neighborhood on 21st Street was shaken before sunrise Thursday when a 29-year-old man, identified by the Harrison County Coroner as Dangelo Murphy of Gulfport, forced his way into a home where two women were staying — both of whom had active protective orders against him.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Gulfport police received an urgent 911 call reporting a break-in through a window. Neighbors who heard the commotion dialed authorities, their voices filled with concern as the early morning calm gave way to panic.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a tense situation unfolding inside the modest home. According to investigators, Murphy entered armed with a knife and a hammer, his intentions unclear but terrifying in their immediacy.

One of the women suffered a minor knife injury as Murphy advanced, a wound serious enough to cause alarm but not incapacitating. In a desperate bid for safety, both women fled to another room and secured the door, their breaths shallow and their hearts racing.

As sirens neared, the uninjured woman made a decision that would alter the course of the morning. She retrieved a firearm — a choice rooted in fear and years of previous legal protection attempts — and confronted the threat. In the briefest, most harrowing exchange, she fired at Murphy, who was struck and died at the scene.

Police cordoned off the area as detectives and forensic teams moved in, piecing together what had happened in the moments before chaos broke the stillness. Neighbors watched from a distance, some wiping sleep from their eyes, others shaken by the violence that had unfolded just steps from their front doors.

Authorities have not released further information on possible charges or the ongoing investigation, but officials said the case will be reviewed as part of standard procedures. For the two women involved, Thursday’s events were a brutal reminder of how swiftly a safe place can be transformed into a scene of life and death.
