It was supposed to be a routine traffic stop in the early morning quiet of Fairmont City, but in a matter of heart-pounding minutes, a Sunday drive turned into a tragedy that crossed state lines and ended a young woman’s life.
The chaos began around 5:15 a.m. today, December 21, when Fairmont City officers pulled over a sedan for speeding. What happened next changed everything. According to investigators, the driver, identified as 29-year-old Precious Black, initially complied and pulled over. But as an officer approached the vehicle, things took a terrifying turn. Precious suddenly hit the gas, catching the officer off guard and dragging him several feet across the pavement before he could break free.

The officer was rushed to a nearby hospital as the sedan disappeared into the darkness. Thankfully, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has since confirmed that while the officer was shaken and injured, he is expected to make a full recovery. His injuries, though painful, were not life-threatening.
The situation didn’t end there. The high-speed flight continued across the river into St. Louis, with Precious leading authorities on a desperate chase. It finally came to a violent halt on I-70 westbound, near West Florissant Avenue. The car lost control and slammed into an overpass, the impact so severe that first responders found Precious dead at the scene. She was the only person in the car.
For hours after the sun came up, the usual morning commute was replaced by flashing blue lights and yellow crime scene tape.
Authorities were forced to shut down that entire section of the interstate, diverting traffic as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigators tried to piece together exactly why a simple speeding ticket led to such a fatal decision.
Local residents and commuters felt the impact of the closure well into the morning, but the real weight of the story is the loss of a 29-year-old life. There are still so many unanswered questions about what was going through her mind in those final moments.
The Missouri Department of Transportation eventually reopened the lanes around 9 a.m., but the investigation is far from over. For now, the St. Louis community is left reflecting on a morning that started with a siren and ended in a tragedy no one saw coming.
