Senate Majority Leader John Thune from South Dakota recently spoke about efforts to prevent a government shutdown, indicating that the Senate is preparing to consider a new funding proposal.
In an interview, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy warned that major U.S. airlines are set to experience significant financial losses due to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) decision to cut flights. This action comes amidst an ongoing government shutdown that has left air traffic controllers working without pay for over a month, leading to various staffing challenges across the nation’s airports.
To ease the burden on these controllers, the FAA has announced a temporary 10% reduction in flights at 40 busy airports throughout the country. Duffy explained that while airlines have been cooperative, they face substantial losses as a result of the flight cuts. He emphasized that travelers who are feeling frustrated should reach out to their Democratic senators, as many have voted against measures to reopen the government.
Duffy criticized the approach being taken, suggesting that shutting down the government is not a legitimate way to achieve political goals, especially when other options, like proposing and debating bills, are available.
The FAA’s plan includes a gradual decrease in flights, starting with a 4% cut, increasing to 10% by the end of the week. This decision aims to ensure that the air travel system remains safe amid the staffing issues caused by the shutdown.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford reiterated their commitment to monitoring flight operations, aiming to prioritize the safety of passengers.
Duffy concluded, “Let’s open the government.” He also expressed frustration about the Senate’s lack of urgency in resolving the situation, pointing out that they should be working daily to find a solution instead of taking breaks while many Americans are struggling.
The ongoing shutdown continues to create challenges not just for government workers, but also for essential services that rely on government support to function effectively. It’s crucial for leaders to find common ground and prioritize the well-being of the American people.
