The deceased has been identified as 60-year-old Anna Gayhart, a resident of Lexington. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after 1 p.m. on February 14 at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
The incident occurred earlier that day in the outbound lanes of Winchester Road, just prior to New Circle Road. Authorities indicated that Gayhart was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, although the specifics of the collision remain undisclosed. The coroner classified Gayhart’s death as accidental. According to police, the driver involved was cooperative at the scene, and no charges are anticipated.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses for Gayhart, which has raised $555 as of Thursday morning, with a target of $900. Brittany Hanson, the organizer of the fundraiser, expressed, “Those who knew Anna knew she was always smiling and had the sweetest soul. She loved her sons and her family, but to my son she was simply Nana.” Gayhart’s passing represents the fifth pedestrian fatality in a motor vehicle incident in Lexington this year.
The Kentucky State Police’s crash database records four prior pedestrian deaths due to car accidents. The most recent incident occurred the day following Gayhart’s death, resulting in the deaths of two men. In the previous year, there were eight pedestrian fatalities, according to KSP data, along with one additional incident that resulted in the death of a bicyclist.
