Asher Linden Tenud Obituary, Death; – Authorities have confirmed the identity of the driver who lost his life in a crash on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Village on Tuesday morning as Asher Linden Tenud. The collision, involving two vehicles, took place just south of Constellation Road at approximately 10 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s investigation, the 19-year-old was operating a green 1998 Jaguar XJR in a southbound direction when he lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve. The car crossed the dirt median and collided head-on with a gray 2007 Honda Odyssey that was traveling northbound.
The driver of the van sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital; however, their identity and current condition had not been disclosed as of Thursday afternoon.
Tenud was pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office reported that he was originally from Portland, Oregon, but had been residing in Santa Maria.
“This is a tragic event for the drivers and their families during what should be a festive season,” stated Buellton Area Commander Lieutenant Jason Bronson in a press release. “We urge everyone to exercise caution and reduce speed during holiday travels, particularly in rainy or adverse weather conditions.”
A report from the CHP indicates that the number of accidents in the vicinity of Constellation Road this year has more than doubled compared to the previous year. As of December 19, the CHP recorded 33 accidents in the area, with 25 of those occurring during wet or rainy weather. Injuries were reported in 14 of these incidents.
In 2023, there were 16 accidents reported at this location, an increase from 10 in 2022. In response to the rise in accidents this year, the CHP has increased patrols in the area during inclement weather, including on Tuesday when an officer was present nearby at the time of the fatal crash.
Officers have informed KSBY that they are collaborating with Caltrans to explore potential improvements to the highway. Anyone who witnessed the crash on Tuesday or possesses information that may assist in the investigation is encouraged to contact the Buellton Area Command.
