The prestigious awards given to the top players in the state are presented by the Chicago Tribune in conjunction with the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. The day after a tentative Chicago Teachers Union contract was reached, Mayor Brandon Johnson took a victory lap on the pivotal education win — one long-promised and hard-won. “I said, ‘get it done,’ and they did,” an ebullient Johnson told reporters at City Hall on Tuesday, almost a year after the previous agreement expired. “I’m confident that the people of Chicago are relieved, first of all, that we’re not going to have the teachers strike or even a strike vote. It’s the first time in 15 years.” Johnson indeed reached this point without Chicago Public Schools classrooms closing, unlike his…
Wrigley Field was a beehive of activity Thursday morning as workers prepared the ballpark for Friday’s home opener between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. Last-minute fixes were still being made, and some Cubs players trickled into the clubhouse to put stuff in their lockers or work out on their off day. In 24 hours the gates would open, and another chapter in the long-running saga of the 111-year old ballpark would begin. When we last saw the Cubs at Wrigley, on Sept. 29, they ended an 83-79 season with a 3-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Craig…

Mayor Brandon Johnson promised Friday to go to court to protect hundreds of millions of dollars in federal money for Chicago schools if President Donald Trump follows through on a threat to revoke the funds from districts that promote diversity, equity and inclusion practices. “We’re gonna sue,” Johnson told reporters at an unrelated public housing event. “We’re not going to be intimidated by these threats. It’s just that simple. So whatever it is that this tyrant is trying to do to this city, we’re going to fight back.” On Thursday, the Education Department issued a notice demanding states and school…

Rules revisions were made, most notably a tweak to last season’s dynamic kickoff experiment in which touchbacks now will be moved out to the 35-yard line instead of the 30. Technological advancements were announced, with Sony’s Hawk-Eye Virtual Measurement System selected to assist with first-down measurements. For the Chicago Bears, the week also offered…
