The Democrat-led Illinois Supreme Court on Wednesday said Republicans waited too long to contest the 2021 redrawing of legislative districts that has maintained Democratic majorities in the state House and Senate. Republicans had argued the Democratic mapping effort was unconstitutional political gerrymandering that limited voters’ choices. But the court’s five-member Democratic majority said the GOP’s “timing in filing the instant motion shows a lack of due diligence.” “Plaintiffs could have brought their argument years ago,” the majority wrote in an unsigned decision. “Their claim that waiting multiple election cycles is necessary to reveal the effects of redistricting is unpersuasive.” Of…
The Denver Rolling Nuggets, Colorado’s National Wheelchair Basketball Association team, are training the next wave of athletes. Having lost sponsorship and participation after the pandemic, the team is rebuilding while also bringing the community together. “We play basketball hard. I mean … you could put us up against probably an NBA team, and in our chairs, we’ve got a chance,” said board member and Rolling Nuggets player Dan Hendrix. “Most people have two hands to use when they are playing basketball. Well, that’s also what we’re using for our legs, too. So as we’re trying to propel ourselves forward, back,…
Sherlock Holmes’ classic case of The Hound of the Baskervilles is on stage at the Lone Tree Arts Center. This production of the whodunit is not like anything audiences would expect. Of course, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are on the case, figuring out who is killing the Baskerville heirs. But, this telling of the story is a fast-paced farce. “It’s a haunted story. It’s a mystery. It’s a ghost story, but it’s also a comedy,” said Matt Zambrano, Director of “Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.” Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first write Hounds of Baskerville as a serial…
Wednesday is a big day for the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame as they induct the class of 2025. One of those inductees, Theodore “Bubbles” Anderson, is the only Colorado native to play baseball for the “Negro Leagues.” Anderson is one of six inductees at the hall of fame’s 60th annual banquet. Also included in this year’s class are former Rockies infielder Troy Tulowitzki, World Cup skiing record holder Mikaela Shiffrin, former Denver Broncos linebacker Simon Fletcher, former Denver Nuggets coach and two time American Basketball Association Coach of the Year Larry Brown, and University of Colorado’s Lisa Van Foor,…
In the days immediately following a deadly dust storm on Interstate 70 in Kansas, Coloradan Eddie Chersevani shared his family’s terrifying experience with CBS Colorado. “A huge gust of wind came up and kicked up so much dirt. It was probably about a good 2 or 3 feet worth of visibility for about 2 seconds and then all lights cut out. I couldn’t see anything,” said Chersevani. He was traveling to New Jersey with his pregnant wife and two children to be with family when they were caught in what turned out to be a 71 car pileup. “She handed…
Downtown Denver has seen a significant number of restaurants and businesses leave the area over the past couple of years. Nearly 200 restaurants have closed, according to the Colorado Restaurant Association. While closures continue, there are still restaurants looking to bring their concepts to the area. “A lot of people will walk in here and say, ‘I don’t know what this is, but this is not a deli,'” Anthony Lygizos said. “But we like that, we like shaking it up.” Lygizos is the proprietor of Leven Brands, which includes several restaurant concepts, Leven Deli being one of them. “We say…
Colorado resident Steven Geer has been doing what he has to since his kidneys stopped functioning, but access to care has been difficult to reach in the high country. “I suffered from an autoimmune disorder several years ago, four years ago, that attacked my kidneys and actually my respiratory tract as well,” Geer said. “I survived that part, but my kidneys failed.” Geer lives in Steamboat Springs and only has access to life-sustaining dialysis by driving three times a week to Avon because there are no closer options. The 85-mile drive along 131 to Interstate 70 takes an average of an…
After a flood of executive orders, mass firings, funding freezes and trade war — all in less than three months — some state lawmakers are setting up a contingency fund in preparation for the next round of whirlwind changes from the Trump administration. A newly introduced bill would create a $4 million fund in the governor’s office to fight “adverse federal action”. Ironically, the money to fight the feds is coming from federal dollars the state received from the Infrastructure and Jobs Act. “We are moving fast to make sure we are prepared,” Speaker of the House Julie McCluskie (D-Col)…
April is Donate Life Month, and while Colorado has one of the highest rates of organ donors in the country, with 62% of people registered, nearly 2,000 Coloradans are still on the waiting list for a transplant. Across the country, more than 100,000 people are waiting for a transplant. Julia Renz is a junior at the University of Colorado who is spreading awareness about organ donation. She says she remembers spending a lot of time at the hospital growing up, which included waiting for her own heart transplant. She’s currently finishing up a busy school year as a triple major…
A new restaurant in Denver will serve the community in more ways than one. Cafe Momentum is a nonprofit restaurant that employs youth exiting the juvenile detention system. In 2023, Cafe Momentum announced they’d be opening a location in Denver, thanks in part to a $1 million grant from the Denver Broncos Foundation. While things are taking a bit longer than expected to get that restaurant up and running, Executive Director Mike Waid said they finally have a spot picked out in the historic Curtis Park Fire Station. “We’re fortunate to be the new residents of former Denver fire station No.…
