Washington — Democratic leaders in Congress on Thursday dismissed the White House’s recent threat that a government shutdown could spur large-scale layoffs of the federal workforce as “intimidation,” standing firm in their position ahead of the Oct. 1 funding deadline. The White House’s Office of Management and Budget sent a memo to federal agencies on Wednesday telling them to consider reduction-in-force notices, or layoffs, for employees in programs, projects or activities that received discretionary funding. The RIF notices would come in addition to any furlough notices directing federal workers to stay home from work without pay if Congress fails to…
President Trump said Thursday he will not let Israel annex the occupied West Bank, an idea that has circulated among members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank,” the president told reporters during an Oval Office event. “There’s been enough. It’s time to stop now.” The president’s comments come after several media outlets reported that Mr. Trump privately assured the leaders of Arab and majority-Muslim states this week that he would push back against any Israeli effort to annex the occupied territory. In recent days, several Western countries — including…
Neighbors living next to Denver’s Elati Village micro community are asking the facility in the city’s Golden Triangle area be shut down or moved “immediately” after an RV parked outside the facility burst into flames during the night of Sept. 11. “It woke me from my sleep,” said a woman who lives in a condominium complex immediately adjacent to the micro community. She said she heard a series of explosions which preceded the RV being engulfed. The woman, who represents the owners of 22 condominiums, asked that her name not be used as she feared reprisal from residents of the…
Part of an Idaho Springs community was placed on lockdown Thursday night before it was lifted early Friday. People were told to shelter in place as law enforcement officers searched for a suspect they called suspicious. The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office released video showing the suspect trespassing on private property. He can be seen in the video armed with a gun and wearing tactical colors. Deputies say on Monday, he trespassed on two properties on Peaceful Valley Lane and stole more than $2,000 in items and caused another $2,000 in damage. Then on Thursday, he allegedly trespassed again on…
Teaching the Autism Community Trades (TACT) is a Denver-based nonprofit practicing exactly what its organization stands for. TACT is making an impact by impact by equipping its students with autism the skills to enter the workforce in an environment that’s conducive for them. Austin Hudson spent three years learning welding and carpentry at TACT. The skills he developed helped him build and sell items to pay the $28,000 for his service dog, Sierra. He relies on her for his ability to work. She’s trained to help calm him down, intervene in the event of an epilepsy seizure, and she also…
Washington — New architectural renderings obtained by CBS News reveal in more detail the White House ballroom that is currently under construction. The Trump administration announced in July that a 90,000-square-foot ballroom with a seated capacity for 650 people will be constructed in the White House’s East Wing. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the project would be paid for by private donors and the president himself, who has committed to disclosing donors’ names. The new ballroom will be significantly larger than the main White House building, which comprises about 55,000 square feet over the ground floor, state floor…
A suspect who fit the description of a masked man with a gun, who prompted a lockdown in a Colorado mountain community, was taken into custody on Friday morning. The man was seen walking around downtown Idaho Springs before CBS Colorado news crews called the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. That man was taken into custody after investigators said he fit the description of the masked man seen on video security cameras in the area. He was detained by deputies near the visitor’s center in Idaho Springs. “While media was on scene, the suspect came down Highway 103 and walked…
In a rural Brighton community in Colorado, residents were stunned by a heartbreaking discovery. It’s the third case of animal cruelty in Adams County in the last two months. In July, 117 animals were rescued from a home in Northglenn, and in August, another 35 animals and three children were rescued from deplorable conditions in a Commerce City home. “We noticed the whole street was lined with sheriffs’ vehicles, both marked and unmarked, and it was definitely something we’re not used to seeing out here,” said one resident in the area anonymously. “It’s just the most extreme neglect you could…
The Aurora Police Department wants to add facial recognition software to its crime-fighting toolkit. The technology, already used in other Colorado cities, has long been controversial. Civil rights advocates say it’s a dangerous step that risks misidentification, privacy violations, and further harm to communities of color. APD says that facial recognition is simply a modern version of what the public already does when asked to help identify a suspect from a photo. “We oftentimes put out photographs of unknown folks, and we’re hoping the community will recognize them,” Aurora Police Commander Chris Poppe said. “We’re just going to use software…
Nearly two weeks after a shooting at Evergreen High School, the local community is coming together to support each other in their healing and through fundraising for those affected by the shooting. So, on a Tuesday night, almost everyone in town was at the Wood Cellar in Evergreen. “Another person reached out to me, and I don’t say this as a negative, she’s like, ‘Oh, wow, there’ll be religion at the Wood Cellar. You know, historically, the Wood Cellar is not a very religious place, right?'” Wood Cellar owner Tabor Cowden said. Yet in a packed bar, they held a…
