Remains Found in Texas Believed to be Missing Woman
Texas authorities have announced that they believe human remains discovered recently belong to Courtney Martin, a 34-year-old woman who went missing over two years ago.
Courtney was last heard from on May 16, 2023, when she called her mother from an intersection, asking for a ride. Unfortunately, when her mother arrived a short time later, Courtney was gone.
The Smith County Sheriff’s Office stated, “That phone call was the last time anyone heard from her,” indicating that they suspect foul play in her disappearance.
Her last known location was less than two miles from her mother’s home. Sheriff Larry Smith shared that extensive efforts were made to find her, stating that they searched for months without results.
On July 3, new information surfaced when a group of young men found a backpack belonging to Courtney near a pond in New Harmony, Texas. This led authorities to launch a search using a dive team.
Shortly after the search began on August 26, human skeletal remains were found. Sheriff Smith mentioned that these remains are believed to be those of Courtney Martin, and the case is now being treated as a full criminal investigation.
The remains have been sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for identification. Sheriff Smith assured that they will thoroughly investigate until they uncover what happened to Courtney.
Courtney’s mother expressed her relief for some closure but still seeks answers about her daughter’s fate. The investigation continues, and both the Texas Department of Public Safety and Smith County Sheriff’s Office are working to provide more information as it becomes available.
