Bryan Kohberger’s Struggles in Idaho Prison

Bryan Kohberger, who was convicted of killing four University of Idaho students, has reportedly faced challenges adjusting to life in prison. On July 30, after spending just one night in the J-Block of the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Boise, he wrote a handwritten note asking to be moved to a different unit.

In his note, Kohberger expressed concerns about what he described as harassment and verbal threats from other inmates. He mentioned feeling unsafe, stating that he wished to escape the environment in J-Block due to ongoing verbal attacks.

Just five days later, Kohberger submitted another note to a guard, alleging that he was experiencing sexual harassment. He claimed that an inmate threatened him with vulgar language.

In addition, he reported another threat where an inmate allegedly said, “The only a– we’ll be eating is Kohberger’s.” These notes led to a response from prison officials, although his request for a transfer was denied.

Kohberger was moved to J-Block on July 29, a unit designed to house up to 128 inmates, including those under protective custody and on death row. In this facility, inmates have one-person cells and limited outdoor recreation time. Kohberger requested a transfer to B-Block, which also has single-person cells but allows only non-contact visits.

Prison officials noted that flooding incidents are rare in J-Block and described the area as generally calm. They advised Kohberger to give it more time. Despite his complaints about threats and harassment, officials suggested he felt safe in his current location.

Currently, Kohberger is serving four life sentences for the murders of students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, who were tragically found dead in their home on November 13, 2022.
