Chavis D Collins Obituary, Death; – A man from Topeka has been charged with first-degree murder in relation to the city’s second homicide.
The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday, February 14, that it has completed its review of the shooting incident that took place on February 8 in the 1700 block of SE 23rd Street in Topeka, Kansas.
On February 13, the Topeka Police Department submitted the findings of their criminal investigation to the District Attorney’s Office. The individual charged in this case, Desmond A. Lindsey, 23, of Topeka, faces several serious charges, including:
(1) First-Degree Murder (Premeditated) (Off-Grid person felony)
(2) First-Degree Murder (Inherently Dangerous Felony) (Off-Grid person felony)
(3) Criminal Discharge of a Firearm into an Occupied Dwelling (Level 7 person felony)
(4) Aggravated Assault (Level 7 person felony)
(5) Aggravated Assault (Level 7 person felony)
(6) Aggravated Endangering a Child (Level 9 person felony)
(7) Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (Level 8 nonperson felony)
According to the District Attorney’s Office, in the early hours of February 8, officers from the Topeka Police Department responded to reports of a disturbance that included possible gunfire. Upon their arrival, they found evidence suggesting a crime scene and were informed that a gunshot victim had been taken to a local hospital. The victim was identified as Chavis D. Collins, 29, of Topeka, who later died from his injuries at the medical facility.
The investigation revealed that multiple individuals were present in the residence at the time of the shooting. Lindsey was identified as the suspect. He voluntarily surrendered to the Law Enforcement Center on February 10, where he was taken into custody without incident and subsequently booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on charges related to this case. All individuals involved in this incident are known to one another.
