Early Wednesday morning, the quiet of Columbia’s Garden Apartments was shattered by gunfire. Authorities have confirmed that 29-year-old Devonte Redmond, a Columbia resident, was shot outside the Plowden Road complex just before 1:30 a.m. Despite officers’ efforts to revive him, he was later declared dead at the scene.
When Columbia Police arrived, they found Redmond lying unresponsive outside the building and immediately began CPR as they awaited paramedics. Their efforts, however, proved unsuccessful. The Richland County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Redmond’s identity.
Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook says detectives, forensic teams, and a K-9 unit worked through the early hours, collecting evidence and scouring the area for any clues that might help lead to those responsible. The motive remains unclear, and no suspects have been named.
To secure the scene, the apartment complex and neighboring streets were temporarily sealed off while investigators canvassed for witnesses. Officials believe Redmond was targeted and shot outside the complex, but they are still reconstructing exactly how events unfolded.
Residents nearby expressed shock, saying the area is usually quiet and that waking up to gunfire was terrifying. “We just want to feel safe where we live,” one tenant lamented, echoing the fears many now share. Local leaders have emphasized calm and urged anyone with information to step forward.
