A tragic accident occurred on Friday when a tour bus returning to New York City from Niagara Falls rolled over on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, New York. The bus, carrying 54 passengers, lost control, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to many others.
Witnesses say the driver seemed distracted before the bus veered off the road and flipped over around 12:30 p.m. The ages of the passengers ranged from 1 to 74. Tragically, multiple people were ejected from the bus during the incident, while others were trapped inside and needed rescue. Fortunately, state police reported that no life-threatening injuries were noted among the survivors.
State police Major Andre Ray expressed deep condolences for the victims and their families, calling the event “an absolute tragedy.” Early investigations suggest that driver distraction was the likely cause, and a mechanical failure was ruled out. Thankfully, the driver survived and is cooperating with authorities. As of Friday evening, no charges had been filed.
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are set to investigate the crash. Regional hospitals reported treating over 40 patients, with some suffering from head injuries and broken bones. At least two individuals requiring surgery are expected to recover, according to medical personnel.
The bus, owned by M&Y Tour Inc. from Staten Island, had a satisfactory safety rating and no reported accidents in the last two years. However, early reports indicate that many passengers were not wearing seat belts. New York state law mandating seat belt use on charter buses may prompt further discussions about safety regulations.
Authorities temporarily closed a section of the roadway following the accident, causing traffic delays, though some lanes have since reopened. Eyewitnesses described a heartbreaking scene, with belongings scattered across the highway and people comforting each other amid the chaos.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also addressed the tragedy, offering thoughts and prayers for the victims and stating that her office is working with local authorities to handle the situation.
