New York City’s Mayor-Elect Names Economic Advisor with Controversial Views

New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has announced his economic and workforce development team. Among those chosen to lead the team is Darrick Hamilton, who has expressed strong opinions about the American economy.

Hamilton believes that some economic issues are tied to race. He has stated that policies and the economy have disadvantaged certain groups. He is known for his ideas on “reparations,” which are payments to make up for past wrongs. One idea he supports is “Baby Bonds,” where the government would give money to children from poorer families to help them build wealth as adults.

Some people have criticized Hamilton’s views. They worry that his focus on race could divide people. Others question whether his ideas are practical and fair to everyone.

Mamdani’s other picks for the team include individuals with progressive viewpoints, like members of the Democratic Socialists of America and leaders focused on “racial and gender justice.”

This choice of economic advisors has raised concerns. Some worry that the new administration is turning to people with extreme ideas that may not help the city’s economy. A Republican strategist, Colin Reed, said that Mamdani is going back to old ideas that didn’t work.

Neither Mamdani nor Hamilton have commented on these concerns.
