Eminem Reflects on Overdose Experience in New Documentary
In a revealing new documentary titled STANS, rapper Eminem shared his story of overcoming a near-fatal overdose that occurred in 2007. The film, which debuted on August 7, explores his journey through addiction and recovery.
Eminem, now 52, discussed the cycle he found himself in, explaining how depression drove him to rely on pills. “I needed more pills to cope, and eventually, my tolerance led to an overdose,” he recounted in the documentary. The experience left him disoriented, waking up in a hospital with tubes connected to him.
A turning point for Eminem came when he missed a significant moment in his daughter Hailie Jade’s life: her first guitar recital. “Seeing that video broke me because I realized I had missed something so important,” he said, expressing deep remorse. This moment prompted him to evaluate what he wanted for his life, asking himself if he was willing to miss everything important.
Since April 2008, Eminem has been sober and has used his experiences to create art, including his 2009 album Relapse, which he crafted during the early days of recovery. Recently, he celebrated 16 years of sobriety, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram about the milestone.
STANS offers an in-depth look at Eminem’s complex relationship with fame and his loyal fan base, featuring personal interviews and rarely seen footage. The documentary showcases how his struggles resonate deeply with his audience, providing a raw and honest perspective on his life.
The film, directed by Steven Leckart, is currently showing in AMC Theatres and will later be available for streaming on Paramount+. Eminem’s story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of family in overcoming life’s challenges.
