Inquiry Launched into Death of Young Woman Linked to Alternative Treatment Choices
Paloma Shemirani, a 23-year-old college student, passed away in July 2024 due to a heart attack linked to an untreated tumor in her chest. Her case has caught public attention, particularly because it involves her mother, Kate Shemirani, a well-known figure in the world of conspiracy theories.
Reports indicate that Paloma rejected chemotherapy, opting instead for alternative treatments, which her mother reportedly encouraged. This has led to accusations of medical malpractice against first responders, as well as controversy over the influence of conspiracy theories on medical decisions.
Paloma’s twin brother, Gabriel, and younger brother, Sebastian, have openly criticized their mother, alleging that her conspiracy views contributed to Paloma’s decision to refuse conventional treatment. Gabriel stated, “My sister has died because of my mother’s actions and beliefs, and I want to prevent others from experiencing this pain.”
Paloma was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2023. Instead of traditional chemotherapy, she chose to follow a specific diet and other alternative therapies. Medical professionals believe the tumor may have led to her heart attack by blocking her airways.
This week, during the inquiry into Paloma’s death, it was revealed that Kate Shemirani had previously made statements labeling chemotherapy as “dangerous.” When questioned about these comments, Kate denied they influenced her daughter’s medical choices, stating, “Paloma was an adult who made her own decisions.”
The inquiry aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding Paloma’s death and identify any responsible parties. Tensions were evident in the courtroom, with a coroner expressing frustration over the Shemirani family’s behavior during the proceedings.
A paramedic also testified that they had to repeatedly ask Kate Shemirani to stop interrupting while they were providing emergency care to Paloma. The inquiry is ongoing and will continue to shed light on this tragic case.
