In a significant move for automotive shopping, Ford Motor Company has announced a partnership with Amazon to sell vehicles directly through the e-commerce giant. Starting Monday, customers will have the option to browse and purchase certified pre-owned Ford vehicles via Amazon, aiming to simplify the buying process for those who prefer not to spend extended time at dealerships.
Beginning with select cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas, this initiative allows buyers to explore inventories from participating Ford dealers directly online. The vehicles available will undergo thorough inspections and come with warranties, ensuring reliability for customers.
This trend reflects a broader shift among automakers to enhance the online shopping experience. Notably, Ford’s CEO, Jim Farley, has highlighted that Tesla’s direct-to-consumer model gives it a competitive advantage. Responding to this market landscape, Ford is expanding its online offerings, particularly for its electric vehicle lineup.
Hyundai set a precedent in late 2023 by being the first automaker to sell new cars through Amazon; Ford now follows suit as the second. As interest grows, around 160 to 180 dealers have shown enthusiasm for this program, with about 20 currently preparing to start selling through Amazon.
While customers can complete their purchases online, they will need to pick up their vehicles from their chosen dealer, maintaining the franchise dealer model that is prevalent across the United States.
This partnership aims to blend cutting-edge technology with traditional car buying, making it easier for consumers to find the vehicle they want without the hassle of dealership visits.
