Gas Prices Drop, Offering Relief to American Families

American families are catching a break at the pump as the average price of regular gasoline has fallen to $2.99 per gallon nationwide. This marks the first time in over four years that prices have dipped below the $3 threshold, offering welcome relief, especially during the busy holiday season.

According to U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, this price drop is no accident. He highlighted the importance of easing financial burdens on families, especially when household spending is typically at its peak.

“Saving money on gas means families have more to spend on what matters most – gifts for their children, paying bills, and supporting their local communities,” Wright explained. “This is what happens when we have leaders who prioritize the needs of the American people and understand the importance of affordable energy.”

Wright emphasized the contrast between policies that support American energy production and those that restrict it. “Imagine the strain on families if we had leaders pushing policies that intentionally make energy more expensive,” he said. “These are political choices, not unavoidable realities. We need leaders who champion policies that keep energy affordable and accessible for all Americans.”

The current national average represents the lowest gas prices since May 2021. Several states are enjoying even lower prices, with Oklahoma ($2.40), Texas ($2.52), and Arkansas ($2.54) leading the way. Other states with notably low prices include Colorado, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, Alabama, and Kentucky.

Meanwhile, some states, particularly on the West Coast and in the Northeast, continue to experience higher gas prices. California ($4.51) and Hawaii ($4.44) have the highest averages, followed by Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Alaska, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Idaho.

There is optimism that gas prices could decline further. President Trump recently expressed his belief that the national average could drop even lower, potentially reaching $2 a gallon. He emphasized the importance of responsible energy policies, including strategic management of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the nation’s emergency oil stockpile.

“We can achieve even lower gas prices if we pursue policies that unleash American energy production and avoid unnecessary restrictions,” Trump stated. He criticized past administrations for drawing down the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for political purposes, emphasizing the need to maintain a strong domestic energy supply.

Secretary Wright highlighted the positive trend of increasing domestic oil and gas production. “We are seeing increased production in the Gulf of America, and overall, U.S. oil production is significantly higher than it was just a year ago,” he noted. “This is a testament to the common-sense approach of supporting American energy independence.”

The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts that gas prices will remain below $3 a gallon on average throughout 2026, providing continued relief for American families and businesses. This offers a bit of breathing room for families budgeting through the holidays and into the new year.
