It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Geraint Morgan on Friday, March 7, 2025. After a long and courageous battle with various illnesses, Geraint, or “Dad” as he was lovingly known, passed away peacefully, free from pain. His final years were marked by exceptional care and support, first at Llanfair Grange, where he moved last year, and more recently, at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen. Though his health had faltered, his indomitable spirit never wavered, and his family takes solace knowing that his final days were filled with dignity and care.
Geraint was a proud Welshman through and through. Born and raised in the heart of Wales, he carried his heritage with great pride, living and breathing the culture that shaped him. As much a part of Wales as the land itself, Geraint’s Welsh spirit permeated everything he did, whether it was through his active participation in Welsh sports or his enduring contributions to the Commonwealth Games. These remarkable achievements remained central to Geraint’s life, and his legacy within his community was built on these values of perseverance and pride in both his country and family.
The culmination of his athletic involvement and love for the nation came with his participation in both the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff and again in 2022 in Birmingham. His return to the Commonwealth Games was nothing short of triumphant, as the community recognized his contributions. In 2022, he had the distinct honor of being celebrated as a local hero, with many of those attending the games eager to meet him, including the flame bearers, who were excited to pose for photos with the man who had carried the Commonwealth flame over half a century ago.
This full-circle moment, one where he stood as a symbol of both tradition and pride, is something Geraint cherished deeply. After the Birmingham games, he shared a quiet moment with his son at the Twelve Knights pub in Margam, a place of fond memories. The two reflected on the past, both filled with deep gratitude and the comforting acknowledgment of how far they had come together.
Geraint’s life, however, was about so much more than sporting achievements. His unwavering commitment to his family was what truly defined him. He had a deep love for his wife, Ann, which formed the bedrock of their shared life together. Their bond was unbreakable, and it was this love that carried them through the highs and lows of life. Together, they built a family rooted in mutual respect, care, and love. Geraint and Ann were an inseparable pair, and his love for her was a cornerstone of his existence.
He also cherished the time he spent with his two sons, whose accomplishments were always met with his quiet pride. His nurturing presence shaped the men they became, offering them unwavering support throughout their lives. His sons, in turn, carried forward the legacy of his care and attention, instilling the same values in their families. Geraint’s devotion extended to his grandchildren as well, Mia, Catrin, Jac, Ana, and Ela, each of whom he held close to his heart. He adored hearing about their lives and would often express his pride in their accomplishments, finding joy in their growth and development.
Geraint also had a special bond with his daughters-in-law, Frances and Anwen, whom he respected deeply. He considered them integral members of his family and enjoyed spending time with them, showing his unyielding care for the entire family unit. The way Geraint welcomed people into his life, including extended family and friends, reflected his genuine kindness and love for those around him.
His life journey took him from the Rhondda Valley to Port Talbot, and eventually to Carmarthenshire, where he settled with his beloved wife. It was in this place that Geraint not only found work but also built a life grounded in love and contentment. His professional career in banking, starting with National Provincial Bank and later transitioning to NatWest, meant that the family had to move a number of times. However, it was his love for Ann that anchored him, making their forever home one of peace and joy.
Outside of work, Geraint enjoyed many passions. He loved playing bowls, participating in quizzes, attending rugby games, and singing in the local choir. These activities were not just hobbies for Geraint; they were ways in which he connected with his community and found fulfillment. The local community was enriched by his involvement, and Geraint’s enthusiasm for these pursuits was contagious. His ability to foster relationships through shared activities was one of the hallmarks of his character, and it’s this warmth that made him beloved by those around him.
Above all, Geraint cherished the time spent with Ann at their caravan in Aberystwyth and New Quay. These moments, filled with love and tranquility, were the highlights of their years together. These peaceful retreats allowed Geraint and Ann to reconnect with nature, find solace in each other’s company, and reflect on the life they had built together. These times at the caravan brought them peace, away from the demands of daily life, and it was in these moments that Geraint truly felt at home.
Now, Geraint’s presence will be deeply missed by his family and the broader community of Llandovery. Those who knew him remember him fondly, with great respect for the man he was. His legacy will not be defined by any one moment but rather by the steady stream of love, kindness, and integrity that he shared with the world around him. He leaves behind a family proud to call him theirs, and a community that will always honor the values he instilled in them.
For his son, the memory of Geraint’s quiet pride in his career as a night photographer is something he will carry with him forever. The fond question, “Where do you get all the energy from?” will stay etched in his mind as a reminder of his father’s support and encouragement. It is this quiet pride that will resonate for generations to come, reminding his family and friends of the love, dedication, and commitment Geraint showed in everything he did.
As we bid farewell to Geraint, we reflect on a life well-lived, one marked by deep love, unwavering dedication, and a commitment to his family and community. Sleep in peace, Dad Bach. Thank you for everything. It was an honor to be your son.
