Early Saturday, tragedy struck in Clackamas County when a woman from Gresham lost her life in a collision on Highway 224. The crash, which also injured two of her passengers, has left the local community shaken and investigators searching for answers.

At about 11:30 a.m., 51-year-old Candida Rodriguez attempted to turn east onto Highway 224 from SE Amisigger Road. As she merged onto the highway, her vehicle—a Toyota Corolla—was struck violently by a westbound Dodge Ram 2500. The force of impact was catastrophic, with both vehicles sustaining heavy damage and Rodriguez suffering fatal injuries.

First responders from Clackamas County fire and rescue units reached the scene quickly. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do to save Rodriguez, who was pronounced dead on site. The two passengers in her vehicle, though shaken and injured, were treated by paramedics and later transported to a nearby hospital. Officials later confirmed that their injuries were minor, and that they were in stable condition.

The driver of the Dodge Ram emerged from the crash unscathed. He remained on the scene, cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation unfolded. While authorities have withheld his identity so far, they have indicated there is no current evidence suggesting that impairment or excessive speed played a role in the incident.

Highway 224 was closed for approximately four hours as Oregon State Police, sheriff’s deputies, and Oregon Department of Transportation crews worked together. Their tasks included documenting the wreckage, collecting critical evidence, and reconstructing the collision dynamics. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes, leading to delays for commuters in the area.

Though investigators continue to sift through witness statements and vehicle data, the cause of the crash remains undetermined. Officials noted that the intersection where Rodriguez attempted the turn is inherently risky, especially if drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic or fail to see a gap.

In a statement to the public, Oregon State Police extended sincere condolences to Rodriguez’s family and reminded all drivers to exercise caution when entering busy highways. They emphasized the importance of patience, vigilance, and ensuring it’s safe before attempting to merge. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
