LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new apartment complex designed to provide stable housing for Louisville’s homeless population is just days away from opening its doors.
The Sheehan Landing Complex, which includes 80 furnished one-bedroom apartments, will serve people with various physical and mental disabilities, addressing a critical need for permanent housing. Located off Preston Highway, the project is part of Louisville’s ongoing efforts to tackle homelessness and provide long-term support for vulnerable individuals.
Jose Vazquez, who lived outside or in his car for much of 2023, knows the importance of the new facility.
“I had all my stuff in the trunk of my car while I was living outside,” Vazquez said, reflecting on his difficult year. “There were a few days where I felt like giving up.”
Vazquez found support at the St. John Center, a nonprofit that assists people facing homelessness.
“St. John changed the trajectory of my life,” he added, crediting the center for helping him get back on his feet.
Ra’Shann Martin, executive director of the St. John Center, said that the Sheehan Landing project is an extension of Louisville’s permanent supportive housing program. It is designed specifically for individuals who are the hardest to house, including those who may refuse traditional shelter options.
“We are providing housing for people who’ve been the hardest to house,” Martin said. “By design, this building will offer 24/7 support, including treatment programs and security.”
The complex aims to offer more than just shelter—it will provide on-site assistance to help residents adjust to stable housing, ensuring that support is available whenever needed.
Vazquez, now in permanent housing, is also running for Metro Council. Affordable housing remains a central issue for him.
“I’m running on a public safety platform,” he said, noting that affordable housing is a key component of his campaign.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for next week to mark the official opening of Sheehan Landing.
