Hawre Sherwani Melbourne Death – The murder of prominent gangland figure and former outlaw motorcycle gang member Hawre Sherwani has sent shockwaves through Melbourne’s underworld and wider community.

Sherwani, a former Comancheros member, was ambushed and shot in Caroline Springs late Thursday evening, succumbing to his injuries in hospital.

Police have described the attack as “highly targeted” and have launched an intensive investigation, while concerns grow over potential retaliation given Sherwani’s extensive connections to organised crime.

Closed-circuit footage captured the chilling moments leading up to Sherwani’s death. The 33-year-old was seen desperately knocking on the door of a house in Heysen Park Way before collapsing and losing consciousness.

The area soon became a crime scene, with homicide detectives recovering a handgun and numerous bullet casings near Sherwani’s abandoned car. Hours later, a vehicle linked to the crime was discovered torched in Fraser Rise, a common tactic used in organised crime to destroy evidence.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson confirmed that police were investigating Sherwani’s criminal history, which includes drug trafficking, extortion, and weapons offences. She also acknowledged the possibility of retaliatory violence, given the high stakes and dangerous networks involved. “This was a targeted attack, and there is no risk to the wider community,” she assured residents, urging anyone with information to come forward.

Sherwani’s life was marked by a pattern of extreme violence and criminal activity. Born in northern Iraq, he arrived in Australia as a refugee at the age of nine. Despite his early struggles, he quickly became entrenched in Melbourne’s criminal underworld, eventually becoming a patched member of the Comancheros motorcycle gang between 2012 and 2015.

In 2014, Sherwani was sentenced to a minimum of four years in prison for a brutal gang-related assault. Court documents detailed how he and an accomplice attacked a former Comancheros member in Collingwood, breaking both of the victim’s arms and causing severe facial injuries. The judge described Sherwani as having “an anger management problem” and the assault as “cold-blooded violence.”

Sherwani’s entanglement with crime extended well beyond his gang membership. In 2023, he was involved in a high-speed chase and violent roadside altercation near the Deer Park Bypass. While he escaped charges in that incident, the confrontation was believed to be connected to a spate of arson attacks that devastated several properties, including his former Caroline Springs home. These firebombings were part of a broader feud involving criminal networks tied to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Less than a year before his death, Sherwani narrowly survived a previous attempt on his life. Two masked assailants fired over 20 shots at him from an Audi S3 while he walked his dog in Fraser Rise. While he managed to escape unscathed, the attack underscored the precariousness of his situation. On Thursday night, however, Sherwani was not as fortunate. The calculated nature of the ambush highlights the risks associated with his high-profile criminal past and numerous enemies.

Residents of Heysen Park Way were left rattled by the violent events. One neighbour reported hearing multiple gunshots, while another described arriving home to a street swarming with police vehicles. Despite reassurances from authorities, the murder has reignited fears about the spillover effects of organised crime in suburban areas.

Police are also pursuing leads about an individual who may have been injured while fleeing the scene. Investigators believe the person’s injuries resulted from a collision and are urging medical professionals or anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Sherwani’s trajectory from refugee to gangland figure is emblematic of the cyclical nature of organised crime. His involvement in high-stakes criminal activities, including extortion, drug trafficking, and arson, ensured he remained a target. The tit-for-tat violence that characterised his life also leaves a trail of destruction for others, as law enforcement continues to grapple with the ripple effects of his criminal legacy.
