Baytown, Texas — A quiet classroom at Ross S. Sterling High School turned into a scene of tragedy Wednesday morning when an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed his classmate during what teachers thought was just another school day. The victim, 16-year-old Andrew Meismer, died hours later at a Houston hospital, leaving classmates, teachers, and a community struggling to make sense of a moment that no one saw coming.

The Baytown Police Department received frantic calls around 10:42 a.m. after reports of a fight in a classroom. Within minutes, officers were on campus and found first responders working to save Meismer, who had been stabbed in the neck with a pair of scissors during an altercation with another male student.

Witnesses described a normal science class quickly spiraling into chaos. What began as an argument between two students escalated so fast that classmates could only recall “blood everywhere” and a flurry of screaming before staff ushered them into the auditorium for safety. Some students said the two boys knew each other, and the disagreement seemed ordinary at first — until it wasn’t.

Meismer was rushed first by ambulance and then prepared for airlift to the Texas Medical Center once weather conditions allowed. Because of fog and wind that trapped helicopters from landing directly on campus, crews transported him to the Baytown Airport before Life Flight could take him to Houston. Despite those efforts, officials confirmed Meismer succumbed to his injuries at approximately 3:35 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect, identified by authorities as 18-year-old Aundre Matthews, was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Baytown jail on a murder charge. Both families were notified shortly after the incident, and Matthews remains in police custody as the investigation continues.

Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District placed the campus on a temporary hold as a precaution while law enforcement secured the area and began their investigation. The hold was lifted before mid-day, and officials assured parents and students that there is no ongoing threat to anyone at the school. Counselors and support staff are being made available to help students, teachers, and families process the shock and grief.

In statements released to the press, district leaders expressed deep sorrow and urged the community to come together in support of the Meismer family and all affected by the tragedy. As police continue to gather evidence, officials said they will release further updates through law enforcement channels and county records once appropriate.
