A night of celebration in the 5500 block of Ridgecrest Road in Louisville’s Newburg neighborhood ended in devastating heartbreak when 45-year-old Tiffany Reiner was fatally shot just after 2 a.m. early Monday morning. What had begun as a birthday gathering for her 20-year-old son derailed into chaos when an argument escalated, a gun was drawn, and two lives were lost.

The evening had been filled with laughter, hugs, and the simple joy of family and friends coming together. Tiffany, known across the neighborhood for her warmth, generosity, and light-filled presence, was right in the middle of it. She and her loved ones were celebrating her son’s milestone birthday when tensions unexpectedly flared. Then came a sudden shot: Tiffany was struck in the head during what her son described as a moment when one of his friends and his mother began arguing.

Responding officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) arrived at the scene and encountered a 20-year-old man identified as Frank Mejia Aguilar, armed and approaching them. Police say he refused commands to drop his weapon and raised it in their direction. One officer, identified as Hunter Weaver of the Sixth Division, fired his service weapon, striking Aguilar. He later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Tiffany was rushed to hospital in critical condition but, tragically, did not survive. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that she died from the injury sustained in the shooting. Her family recalls the moment in disbelief — standing beside her, her son remembers, “I don’t see it… it just doesn’t make any sense.”

In the community of Newburg, Tiffany was more than just a neighbor — she was a linchpin of kindness. Known for her infectious laugh, the way she brought people together, and how she cared for everyone around her, Tiffany embodied compassion in action. Her children knew her as their protector, confidant, and unwavering supporter. Her passing leaves behind a void that’s impossible to fill.

As the investigation proceeds, the Public Integrity Unit of LMPD has taken the lead. They have confirmed that body-worn camera footage from the incident will be released within 10 business days. Meanwhile, Tiffany’s family has asked the community for prayers, understanding, and peace during this inconceivably heavy time.

In the wake of this tragedy, the night meant to honor life instead leaves a profound reminder of its fragility. Tiffany’s memory will live on — not defined by how her life ended, but by how beautifully she lived it. May she rest in peace.
