Historic Milestone: Jen Pawol Becomes First Female Umpire in MLB
Jen Pawol is set to make history this weekend as she becomes the first female umpire to officiate in Major League Baseball (MLB). This groundbreaking event will take place during the games between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves on August 9 and 10.
Pawol, 48, hails from New Jersey and will be on the field for the doubleheader at Truist Park in Atlanta. During Saturday’s game, she will be stationed at the bases, and on Sunday, she will be behind the plate calling balls and strikes, as confirmed by MLB officials.
Her journey has been inspiring. In 2024, she was the first woman to umpire spring training games since Ria Cortesio achieved the same feat in 2007. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred praised Jen’s hard work and dedication, noting that her achievement sets a strong example for women and young girls aspiring to enter the sports field.
Before becoming an umpire, Pawol was an accomplished athlete. She played softball and soccer at West Milford High School, earning all-state honors in both sports. She then went on to Hofstra University on a softball scholarship, where she distinguished herself as a three-time all-conference selection. Moreover, she was a member of the USA Baseball women’s national team in 2001.
Pawol continued her education by earning a master’s degree while also working towards her teaching certification. She began umpiring NCAA softball from 2010 to 2016, taking a significant step by attending an MLB umpire tryout camp in 2015. This led her to the Umpire Training Academy in Vero Beach, Florida, and a job offer in the Gulf Coast League in 2016.
Finally, in 2024, she made her MLB debut during spring training games, marking a significant moment in baseball history.
In her own words, “I just love doing the job. I’m passionate about it, and it’s just part of who I am,” Pawol shared back in 2016.
As Pawol prepares for this historic weekend, she emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication. “You’ve just got to keep it simple, keep working hard, and put your all into it,” she remarked. With her debut, she not only breaks barriers but also inspires future generations to follow their dreams in sports.
