Two men have been arrested after a young racing champion was killed during a home invasion in Forest City, North Carolina.
Tyler Weaver, a 25-year-old who won a national kart racing title twice in 2018, was found dead in a home on October 24th. Police say they were called to the scene around 9:50 a.m.
Police Chief Chris LeRoy said that Weaver had been shot. He described it as a “robbery gone bad” and believed it was a “targeted” attack.
Weaver’s partner, Nevaeh Quintero, was also in the house at the time. She managed to escape and call for help.
Officers searched the woods near the house but couldn’t find the people responsible right away.
After investigating, police issued arrest warrants for Jaquavious Antwan Craig, 26, and Quitez Lamare Watkins, 35, for first-degree murder.
Watkins was arrested on Monday, November 3rd. Craig turned himself in the same day.
Officials said Craig will be held without bail until his court appearance.
Police added that the investigation is still ongoing, and they are grateful to all the agencies helping with the case. They believe that without the help of these groups, it would have taken much longer to make progress and bring closure to Weaver’s family.
Craig and Watkins are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, November 12th.
Maxxis Kart Racing North America, a racing organization, shared a message about Weaver after his death.
They said that everyone at Maxxis Kart Racing was heartbroken to hear about Weaver’s passing. They remembered him as a proud champion and said his legacy would always be part of the Maxxis family.
Weaver worked as an electrician in construction. He leaves behind his mother, stepfather, sisters, partner Nevaeh Quintero, and other family members.
