In Florida, a couple is in trouble with the law after their four-year-old twin boys were hurt in a shooting. The little boys found a handgun in their house, which led to the incident.
The police were called early one morning because of reports of two young children with gunshot wounds. Keishara B. Goodrum, who is 39, told police she heard a loud noise like a gunshot. She then found one of her sons had been shot in the arm.
Goodrum said she had been drinking the night before. She was in the kitchen making breakfast when she heard the “pop.” The children’s father, Maurice Wayne Bright Jr., who is 40, said he was outside cooking when he heard the commotion. He rushed inside to see what happened.
The parents took their children to the hospital. On the way, they realized the second child had also been shot. Both boys are still in the hospital. They are in serious condition but are getting better.
Goodrum told the police that she might have forgotten to put her gun away safely the night before. She thinks she might have left it under a couch cushion where the children could find it. There were three other children in the house at the time of the shooting.
Goodrum and Bright were arrested. Goodrum is accused of neglecting her children, causing them great harm. Bright is accused of having a gun even though he isn’t allowed to because he’s a convicted felon. They are both being held in jail and have to pay $10,000 to get out.
In Florida, there’s a law that says if you have kids under 16, you have to keep your handguns locked up. This is to stop kids from getting hurt. The law says guns should be in a locked box or have a special lock on them so they can’t be used without permission.
Police have said that the Department of Children and Families is also looking into the situation. Bright might be able to get his children back if he pays his bail and gets out of jail.
