Lost Him Over a Burger”: The Heartbreak of a Life Cut Short at a Jacksonville Drive-Thru

The sheer senselessness of it is what grips you. In a tragedy that has left a community in Jacksonville, Florida, reeling, 18-year-old Matthew Jackson, described by his grieving mother as a “good soul,” was fatally shot while working at a Burger King. The motive for the killing? Allegedly, an order was wrong. A simple, common customer complaint spiraled into a deadly act of violence, proving once again how fragile life can be when rage meets a firearm.

The horrifying incident unfolded on Saturday, November 22nd, around 8:40 PM at the fast-food location on Blanding Boulevard. What should have been a routine end to a weekend shift for the young worker turned into a nightmare when an upset customer, later identified as 28-year-old Dawud Burritt, allegedly reacted violently to a mistake with his order. It’s an almost unbelievable chain of events that culminated in gunfire in the drive-thru area.

Matthew was hit, and tragically, he did not survive his injuries. The news sent shockwaves through the community, but the deepest cut was felt by his family. Matthew’s mother took to social media to share her unfathomable pain, writing the heartbreaking words that captured the absolute absurdity of the loss: she lost her son “over a burger.” It’s a phrase that will likely echo through the ensuing court proceedings and serve as a stark reminder of the trivial nature of the dispute that claimed a young life.

The tragedy was a double shooting. Another man was also injured in the attack. Thankfully, authorities have confirmed that the second victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. This survivor provides a crucial link to the events, but the loss of Matthew remains the central devastation of the night. It highlights the completely random and unprovoked nature of the violence that swept through the restaurant.

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) moved quickly. Dawud Burritt was identified as the suspect after investigators reviewed evidence and conducted interviews. He was arrested on Sunday morning and is now facing severe charges, including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and armed burglary. For Matthew’s family, the swift arrest may offer a slight measure of closure, but it can never fill the void left by their son’s absence.

While the investigation is still ongoing and police have not released all details regarding the confrontation, the current understanding that a minor food error led to such an explosive reaction paints a deeply disturbing picture of misplaced rage. It forces us to ask how a simple transaction could end with a life extinguished, shining a harsh light on the simmering anger and easy access to weapons that often turns fleeting frustration into permanent sorrow.

As Burritt prepares for his first court date in December, the community continues to mourn Matthew Jackson. JSO released a public statement offering condolences to his loved ones and wishing the other victim a speedy recovery. For those who knew Matthew, and even for strangers reading the headlines, the story is a painful symbol of a beautiful young future that was cruelly snatched away—all because a man was allegedly unhappy with a meal.
