Sheffield, UK (November 2025) — A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 26 years for the tragic murder of father-of-two Chris Marriott, who was killed while trying to assist a woman lying in the road after a wedding day brawl in Sheffield.

Hassan Jhangur, 25, was convicted for the fatal incident that unfolded on December 27, 2023, following a violent altercation between two feuding families. The incident occurred on College Close, Burngreave, as Jhangur, of Whiteways Road, Sheffield, arrived at the scene in his Seat Ibiza.

    What Happened:

Jhangur drove into the scene of the altercation, first striking Riasat Khan, the father of the other family, before ploughing into a crowd of people, including 54-year-old Chris Marriott. Mr. Marriott, who had been out on a post-Christmas walk with his family, stopped to assist Jhangur’s sister, Nafeesa, who was lying in the road. Tragically, Marriott was struck by Jhangur’s vehicle and died from the injuries sustained in the collision.

Jhangur then exited the car and proceeded to attack his new brother-in-law, Hasan Khan, who had married Jhangur’s sister, Amaani, just hours earlier. Jhangur stabbed Hasan Khan multiple times in the ear and back, leaving him seriously injured.

    Who Was Chris Marriott:

Chris Marriott was described as a kind-hearted and selfless individual. A charity worker and family man, he had stopped to assist Nafeesa Jhangur in what he likely perceived as a moment of crisis. His actions, described by police as that of a “good Samaritan,” tragically cost him his life. Marriott’s family and the community have expressed profound grief over his untimely death, with many mourning the loss of a man who always put others before himself.

    The Court Case:

During the trial, the jury heard how Jhangur’s reckless and violent actions led to the death of an innocent man who was simply trying to help. The court condemned his actions as an unnecessary escalation of an already volatile situation.

In sentencing, the judge highlighted the extent of Jhangur’s violent behavior, which included the initial collision and the subsequent stabbing of his brother-in-law. The judge also noted that Jhangur’s actions were not only dangerous but also merciless, as he showed no regard for the safety of those around him.

    Public and Social Media Reactions:

The case has sparked outrage in the local community, with many expressing disbelief over the senseless nature of the crime. Social media tributes to Chris Marriott flooded in, with many referring to him as a hero for trying to help someone in need. His death has prompted calls for greater accountability in cases where violence escalates unnecessarily, and people are killed in the process of offering assistance.

    Official Statements:

Police described Marriott’s actions as heroic, referring to him as a “good Samaritan” who paid the ultimate price for his kindness. A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Chris Marriott’s actions that day were selfless, and his tragic death highlights the dangers of reckless behavior during violent disputes.”

A family statement from Marriott’s relatives expressed their devastation: “Chris was a loving husband, father, and friend. He did not deserve to die like this. His kindness and willingness to help others will be remembered, and we will continue to honor his legacy every day.”

    What Happens Next:

Following Jhangur’s conviction, he will serve at least 26 years before being considered for parole. The Marriott family is left to grieve the loss of a beloved member while also reflecting on the senseless violence that took him away from them.

The case highlights the importance of intervention in violent situations and the potential risks associated with trying to help in chaotic circumstances.
