Seattle Mariners pitcher Trent Thornton suffered an injury during a game against the Texas Rangers in the ninth inning on Thursday night. While attempting to field a ground ball, Thornton was injured and needed to be carted off the field as his teammates looked on.
After the game, Thornton was seen using crutches in the Mariners’ locker room. The team had not yet provided a formal diagnosis of the injury to his lower left leg, which he sustained while fielding a hit from Adolis Garcia with two outs. Thornton expressed concern that he may have injured his Achilles and mentioned he would undergo an MRI the following day.
“It’s probably the Achilles, but that’s just speculation, so I’ll find out tomorrow,” Thornton remarked, clearly frustrated by the situation.
Thornton had just entered the game to start the eighth inning, where he successfully retired the first five batters he faced. However, as he delivered a pitch that resulted in a ground ball, he felt a sudden pain and fell to the ground.
“I thought I broke the guy’s bat, but it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,” he explained. When he tried to stand, he couldn’t put any weight on his leg.
“It didn’t hurt much, just felt achy and numb,” he added. Despite his worries, he was still processing the incident as he awaited more information about his condition.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson praised Thornton’s performance before the injury, expressing his hope for a positive outcome. “We’ll find out more tonight. Hoping for the best,” Wilson stated.
