Michael Shipman Jr Obituary, Death; – The investigation is ongoing to determine the motive and identify any suspects related to a fatal shooting that occurred on New Year’s Eve in Landover.
The incident was reported shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the 7500 block of Landover Road. The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Michael Shipman, Jr. from Washington, D.C., who was discovered inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.
Shipman was pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, another woman sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she received treatment for non-life-threatening wounds.
Michael Shipman, Sr., the victim’s father, expressed uncertainty regarding his son’s presence in the area that evening. “He does frequent that area, but I don’t know why he was there that day. I just spoke with him. I believed he was somewhere else,” he stated. “It was just a regular day, a normal conversation.”
Shipman assumed his son was leaving work, noting that he had recently begun a job in waste management and was making positive changes in his life.
“He was a good, outgoing person. He had a sense of humor, was generous, and always there when needed. I am unsure what transpired that day. I cannot claim my son was an angel; I do not know what he was involved in on the streets,” he remarked. Shipman mentioned that each family member is coping with the loss in their own way.
“His siblings are struggling significantly, as he was the youngest among them. Their grieving process is somewhat different,” he explained. “I approach life realistically. I do not live in a fantasy. It is my son, but we all have children, and we cannot always know what they do outside. We communicate with them; sometimes they heed our advice, and sometimes they do not.”
The death of Shipman, Jr. marks the 114th homicide in Prince George’s County for 2024 and is the final one of the year. According to departmental statistics, there were 120 homicides recorded in 2023.
A spokesperson for the police department was unable to confirm the relationship between the woman and Shipman, Jr., citing a policy that prohibits the disclosure of identifying information regarding surviving victims. The Homicide Unit of the PGPD is actively investigating the case.
