MT. JULIET, Tenn. — A high-stakes police operation unfolded in Mt. Juliet on Monday morning, September 8, resulting in the capture of two murder suspects wanted in Kentucky. The suspects, identified as Jeremiah James, 23, and Madison Greenwell, 21, both from Shelbyville, KY, were apprehended after a multi-agency response involving advanced technology, aerial support, and community cooperation.
What Happened
The operation began around 10:20 a.m. when the Lebanon Police Department notified the Mt. Juliet Police Department (MJPD) about an active pursuit on Interstate 40 West. The pursuit started after Lebanon Police received an alert from their license plate reader system regarding a stolen vehicle. The car had been taken during an armed carjacking in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 5.
While MJPD officers attempted to deploy spike strips near the Golden Bear Gateway exit, Lebanon Police ended their pursuit before Mt. Juliet officers could visually confirm the suspects’ location. However, the MJPD’s #MJGuardianShield license plate reader system soon detected the vehicle traveling southbound on Golden Bear Gateway near Beckwith Road. Meanwhile, a Wilson County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle but lost sight of it near South Rutland Road.
Search and Capture
Believing the suspects were still in the area, Mt. Juliet officers expanded their search efforts. The stolen vehicle was found abandoned on Syler Drive in the Beckwith Crossing neighborhood, prompting authorities to establish a perimeter. With help from neighborhood witnesses, detailed descriptions of the suspects were obtained, and an MJAlert was issued to inform residents.
As backup from Wilson County deputies and a Metro-Nashville Police Department helicopter arrived, the manhunt intensified. The breakthrough came when a witness on Collier Road reported seeing the suspects running behind their property. Officers quickly responded, locating and arresting James and Greenwell without further incident.
What’s Next
Both suspects were confirmed to be wanted in Shelby County, Kentucky, for a fatal incident in August. Their arrest was tied to the stolen Toyota Sienna from Louisville, which had been carjacked on September 5. In addition to the suspects, officers found a dog with the pair. The animal was safely transferred to Mt. Juliet Animal Care and Control, where it will be cared for until it can be returned to a family member.
MJPD expressed gratitude for the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, the community, and technology systems that facilitated the swift capture. The department emphasized the importance of real-time data, inter-agency communication, and citizen vigilance in maintaining public safety.
“This arrest demonstrates how our integrated technology and partnerships protect the community,” MJPD said in a statement. “Because of the fast actions of officers, deputies, and neighbors, two dangerous individuals are now in custody.”
With James and Greenwell now in custody, authorities in both Tennessee and Kentucky are coordinating further investigation and extradition proceedings.
