LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A new resource is now available in southern Indiana to help kids and teens dealing with homelessness.
Open Door Youth Services and One Southern Indiana hosted a ribbon cutting Friday afternoon for The Sanctuary on Corydon Pike in New Albany.
The new shelter program provides temporary housing and support for youth between the ages of 10 and 17 who are experiencing homelessness or crisis situations.
The Sanctuary offers a safe, stable environment for up to 21 days, including counseling, resources and life skills development, as well as access to basic necessities.
The shelter program also offers individual, family, and group counseling “to help youth navigate difficult situations and plan for a secure future.”
“This is a way for children, without having to be in the court system or with the police, to be able to seek sanctuary and have a safe place to go,” said Christy Lee, president of Open Door Youth Services.
The Sanctuary is open 24/7. If you know someone in need of emergency shelter or support, call the 24-hour tip line at (812) 948-5481 or (812) 786-5172.
Open Door Youth Services is a nonprofit that works to help vulnerable youth by providing safe and supportive services, offering emergency shelter, programs, counseling and outreach services. The goal of the organization is to “help youth in crisis find stability and success.”
