NFL Reinstates Social Justice Messages in End Zones
As the new NFL season approaches, the league has decided to reinstate social justice messages in its end zones, continuing a practice that has been underway since 2020. This season, fans will see messages like “End Racism,” “Stop Hate,” “Choose Love,” and “Inspire Change” in various games. The phrase “It Takes All of Us” will also be prominently displayed in the opposite end zone during every match.
Last February, during Super Bowl LIX, the NFL did not use the “End Racism” slogan, leading to speculation about whether the absence of this message was linked to external political pressures. In particular, some wondered if the decision was influenced by former President Donald Trump’s opposition to diversity and inclusion initiatives. Trump had watched a Super Bowl live, as a guest of New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson.
Despite this speculation, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy clarified that the decision to remove the “End Racism” slogan was not politically motivated. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also emphasized that the league’s commitment to diversity and inclusion remains strong.
“We got into diversity efforts because we felt it was the right thing for the National Football League,” Goodell stated. “And we’re going to continue those efforts, because it makes the NFL better.”
The return of the “End Racism” message will also be present during the NFL’s international games this season, with the same “It Takes All of Us” displayed in the other end zone.
This season kicks off with a significant matchup between the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, where “Choose Love” will be featured in one of the end zones. Throughout the season, the Eagles plan to rotate all four social justice messages.
Since being introduced, “End Racism” has been an integral part of the NFL’s “Inspire Change” initiative. This initiative aims to tackle social justice issues and was established in response to widespread protests following the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020. The league aims to contribute to a broader dialogue about race and equality.
In 2022, the phrase “Choose Love” was added to the rotation, specifically resonating with fans after a tragic mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. This addition allows the league to encompass a wider range of social issues, reinforcing a message of community and support.
In addition to these social justice messages, the NFL is set to promote various charitable campaigns as part of its social responsibility efforts. Events like the “Salute to Service,” which honors the military, and “Crucial Catch,” aimed at raising awareness for cancer research, will also be highlighted in select weeks throughout the season.
The NFL’s commitment to these initiatives demonstrates its effort to engage with social issues while connecting with its diverse fanbase. By promoting messages of unity and love, the league hopes to encourage conversations around important social topics, all while keeping the spirit of the game alive.
As the season unfolds, fans will be able to witness how the NFL continues to balance the excitement of professional football with the pressing social issues of our time. It will be interesting to see how these messages resonate with audiences and impact the broader community.
