The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) is introducing a new initiative to make road tests more accessible for teen drivers. The NCDMV has begun certifying private driver education schools to conduct road tests for teens seeking their Level 2 Limited Provisional License, aiming to reduce wait times and offer greater flexibility for families.

    What Happened

In an effort to streamline the process of obtaining a driver’s license for teens, the NCDMV has announced that certified private driver education schools will now be able to conduct road tests for teens who have a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit. This new initiative allows teens to take their road test at a private school before needing to visit an NCDMV office to obtain their Level 2 Limited Provisional License.

The move is designed to reduce wait times at NCDMV offices and provide teens with more convenient testing options. While teens can still opt to take their road test at an NCDMV office, those who pass the test at a certified private school will only need to visit the office to complete the licensing process.

    Benefits of the Initiative

According to NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine, this initiative will increase efficiency at NCDMV offices by allowing driver license examiners to focus on in-office services. “By outsourcing some road tests to certified private driver education schools, we’re providing more options for teens and their families while increasing efficiency at our driver license offices,” Tine said.

This program is expected to significantly reduce wait times for teens and their families, offering a more flexible path to obtaining a Level 2 Limited Provisional License.

    Cost of Road Tests

The NCDMV stated that the cost of road tests will be determined by each certified driver education school. For more information on which schools are certified to conduct road tests, you can visit the NCDMV website.
