New York City will see familiar leadership in its police department. Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced that Jessica Tisch will remain as the city’s Police Commissioner.
Mamdani’s team said that they plan to work together on public safety, focusing on serious crimes while also addressing issues like homelessness and mental health. They plan to create a new Department of Community Safety that will work with the NYPD.
The Mayor-elect’s office praised Tisch for her work in fighting corruption within the police force and for her focus on making the department more open and responsible. They also noted that she has helped to reduce violent crime in the city.
Mamdani stated he looks forward to working with Commissioner Tisch to improve public safety in New York City. He has been impressed by her work to stop corruption and lower crime rates. He believes that together, they can make New York a safer place for both police officers and the people they serve.
Commissioner Tisch said that the strategies the NYPD has used have led to a big drop in crime. She also said that she and Mayor-elect Mamdani share the same goals for New York City: to lower crime, make communities safer, fight corruption, and give police officers the support they need.
Tisch became the NYPD Commissioner in November 2024.
Mamdani’s office also highlighted that under Tisch’s leadership, murders have decreased by almost 20% this year, and more than 4,800 illegal guns have been taken off the streets.
