Early Wednesday morning, the tight‑knit community of Highland, Indiana awoke to tragic news. At around 4:39 a.m., officers from the Highland Police Department responded to a call in the 9200 block of U.S. 41 / Indianapolis Boulevard, where they discovered a 2021 Jeep had veered off the road into an open lot, struck a tree and rolled over.
The driver, identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office as 47‑year‑old Theodore McSwine of Highland, was alone in the vehicle and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

According to the police report, the Jeep left the roadway for reasons currently under investigation, entered a vacant lot, impacted a tree and then overturned. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The coroner’s office confirmed that Theodore was pronounced dead at 5:58 a.m. following an autopsy at the county forensic center.

While investigations remain ongoing, officials have said they are looking into road and weather conditions, potential mechanical failures and other possible contributing factors. The Highland Police Department, along with the South County Accident Reconstruction Team, are assisting the coroner’s office in gathering the facts.

The crash forced a temporary closure of a section of Indianapolis Boulevard as crews worked to clear the scene and document the wreckage. The roadway has since reopened to traffic.

For those who knew Theodore, this loss is more than a statistic—it’s the sudden departure of a kind man whose presence reached far beyond his own family. Neighbors recall his gentle nature, quiet strength and the way he made others feel valued simply by being himself. In a community where such qualities matter deeply, his absence is painfully felt.

As the investigation continues, the Highland Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office have extended their sincere condolences to his family and reassured the public that they are committed to providing answers. Theodore McSwine (1978–2025) will be remembered not just for the day that ended his life, but for all the days he made brighter for those around him.
