A lifeguard in Hawaii is recovering after being bitten by a shark while surfing off the coast of Kauai.
Chance Swanson, a 33-year-old lifeguard, was surfing in Hanalei Bay when the incident happened. According to reports, Swanson was in an area known as “Middles” when the shark attacked him.
Other lifeguards noticed Swanson was in trouble and quickly came to his rescue. They applied a tourniquet to his leg to stop the bleeding. Swanson was then rushed to the hospital.
Officials say Swanson was drifting in and out of consciousness while first responders were helping him at the scene. He was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment. He has undergone multiple surgeries.
Following the attack, Hanalei Bay was closed to the public due to continued shark sightings in the area.
Swanson’s mother expressed immense gratitude to the lifeguards who saved her son’s life. She said that without their quick action, he might not have survived. His brother described him as someone who loves the simple things in life, like surfing and being in nature.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Swanson with his medical expenses.
