ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The former University of Michigan head football coach, Sherrone Moore, 39, now finds himself at the center of a harrowing legal and personal crisis that unfolded in the wake of his sudden firing this week. Moore was charged Friday with felony third-degree home invasion and two misdemeanors — stalking in a domestic relationship and breaking and entering — after prosecutors say he entered the home of a woman he had a long-term relationship with and made chilling statements that prompted a 911 call.

Moore’s arrest came just hours after Michigan announced his dismissal on Wednesday for cause, citing credible evidence that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The university’s statement underscored a zero-tolerance policy for such conduct, a stance it reiterated as details of the arrest emerged.

(AP Photo/ Ryan Sun, Pool)According to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, the alleged victim ended the relationship earlier in the week, after which Moore allegedly began contacting her repeatedly despite her lack of response. Following his termination, prosecutors say Moore went to her apartment in Pittsfield Township, forced his way inside without permission, and grabbed several kitchen knives and a pair of scissors. Once inside, he reportedly threatened to harm himself and made alarming comments, including saying “my blood is on your hands” and “you ruined my life,” though there’s no indication he directly threatened the victim with the utensils.

Law enforcement officers were called by the victim after the incident, which she described as intimidating and terrifying. Moore had left the residence by the time police arrived, but he was later arrested by authorities in nearby Saline and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail.

During his arraignment Friday in Washtenaw County District Court — which he attended via video from jail — a judge set Moore’s bond at $25,000 cash and imposed strict release conditions. He must wear a GPS monitoring device, continue with mental health treatment, surrender his passport, and have no contact with the alleged victim. Prosecutors described the home invasion charge as punishable by up to five years in prison, while the misdemeanor stalking and breaking and entering counts carry potential sentences of up to one year and 90 days, respectively.

The swift escalation of events — from leading one of college football’s most prestigious programs to facing serious criminal charges in less than a week — has sent shockwaves through the sports world and the Ann Arbor community. Moore, who became Michigan’s head coach in early 2024 and led the Wolverines to a successful season, has a family and previously no known criminal history.

Interim leadership has already been established for the team, with associate coach Biff Poggi stepping in to guide Michigan through its upcoming Citrus Bowl appearance. As the legal process continues, Moore is scheduled to appear again in court on January 22, 2026, when further proceedings will determine how this case unfolds.
