On Monday night in Shirley Township, a fierce blaze broke out at a Croghan Pike residence, ultimately claiming the life of 74-year-old Dorothy Bubb after she succumbed to smoke inhalation. Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and flames and, despite their desperate efforts, were unable to save her.

The fire was reported around 6:15 p.m., according to responding crews. When they reached the scene, the home—located just behind the New Life Fellowship Church—was already heavily engulfed, with thick smoke pouring out and visible flames. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours, conducting a room-to-room search while trying to contain the fire and protect nearby structures.

Early reports suggest as many as seven residents may have lived in the house, though it’s uncertain how many were inside when the flames erupted. It’s confirmed, however, that other occupants were able to flee. Local media also reported that two other people were taken to the hospital for burn-related injuries, though their conditions and identities have not been fully disclosed.

Once the blaze was subdued, investigators from the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Unit moved in to comb the site. Though authorities say the fire doesn’t currently appear suspicious, the cause is still undetermined and the probe remains active. Officials are examining electrical systems, heating sources, and other potential household hazards, while interviewing witnesses and reviewing any physical evidence.

Neighbors in Shirley Township have been visibly shaken. Many spoke of Dorothy as a warm, kind, and friendly presence in the community—someone who took care of others and was always thoughtful. The shock of her sudden passing has rippled through the neighborhood, prompting many to express condolences and offer support to her surviving family and the other residents displaced by the fire.

Local agencies responded quickly: the Shirley Township Fire Department, several volunteer fire companies, and emergency medical services all played a role in the response. The American Red Cross has also been notified to help people affected by the fire. Meanwhile, the Huntingdon County Coroner’s Office continues to assist with the investigation alongside the state fire marshals.

As the community processes this tragedy, officials are urging everyone to revisit their fire safety measures—test smoke alarms regularly, replace old batteries, and have a clear escape plan. The heartbreaking loss of Dorothy Bubb is a grim reminder of how quickly a fire can engulf a home and that early warning systems and vigilance really matter.
