SPUR, Texas — The afternoon sun was still bright on Wednesday when the unthinkable happened: longtime City of Spur public works employee Joe Gutierrez lost his life in a workplace accident that left the town reeling. Just before 2 p.m., emergency services rushed to Carroll Avenue and 5th Street, where a routine utility trench operation turned fatal when the earth suddenly gave way and buried Gutierrez under tons of soil.

Colleagues described Gutierrez as more than just a coworker — he was a dedicated public servant, a husband, father and friend whose smiling presence was a familiar part of daily life in this tight-knit West Texas community. But on Wednesday, that presence was tragically taken away when the walls of the excavation he was working in collapsed without warning.

Volunteer firefighters, Dickens EMS, and the Dickens County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately after the 911 call, racing to stabilize the situation and free Gutierrez from the debris. Despite their urgent efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

City leaders were shaken. Mayor John Schmidt and Dickens County Judge Kevin Brendle both issued heartfelt statements expressing their sorrow, remembering Gutierrez as a pillar of the community and offering comfort to his grieving family and coworkers. Their words echoed across social media and city hall, calling for support and solidarity in a time of shared grief.

Neighbors and fellow workers have since shared memories of Gutierrez’s warm laugh and unwavering work ethic. Parents talked about how he waved to their kids on his morning rounds; coworkers recalled his readiness to lend a hand — whether fixing a break in a sewer line or helping someone carry tools. In every account, the same thing stood out: he cared deeply about his work and the people around him.

The incident remains under official review by city and county officials as part of standard procedure in workplace fatalities. Authorities have pledged to release further information if it becomes available, but have not yet announced any findings or safety determinations.

As Spur begins to process this loss, community members are gathering to support the Gutierrez family, holding space for collective mourning at the public works yard where flowers and notes now sit beside Gutierrez’s hard hat. In a town defined by its resilience, neighbors are reminding one another to lean in, share memories, and honor the life of a man who gave so much to the place he called home.
