Disqualification at Strongman Games Highlights Ongoing Controversy Over Gender Eligibility in Sports

In a recent turn of events at the Official Strongman Games World Championship in Arlington, Texas, Jammie Booker, a 28-year-old athlete from Philadelphia, has been disqualified from the competition after it was revealed that he is biologically male. This decision came after Booker was awarded the title of “Women’s Open Champion,” edging out British strongwoman Andrea Thompson by just one point.

The competition, which officially took place over two days, drew significant attention not just for the athletic display but also for the questions it raised regarding gender eligibility. Many female competitors voiced their concerns, especially after seeing the significant physical differences between Booker, who stands at 6’5” and weighs around 400 pounds, and Thompson, who measures 5’5” and weighs about 265 pounds.

Commentary on this notable victory soon echoed across social media platforms. Piers Morgan, a prominent broadcaster, remarked sarcastically about the implications of Booker’s biological male status, urging a re-examination of fairness in women’s competitions.

Following the uproar, the Official Strongman Games issued a statement confirming Booker’s disqualification. They explained that they were unaware of his biological status at the time of the competition. The organizers stressed that had they known before or during the event, Booker would not have been allowed to compete in the women’s category.

The Strongman Games traditionally relied on self-declaration for gender participation but is now facing pressure to revise its policies. While aiming to ensure inclusivity, the organization revealed their intention to shift towards stricter guidelines to prevent future eligibility controversies.

Thompson’s reaction during the awards ceremony captured the disappointment felt by many in the women’s division. She was visibly upset, expressing her feelings about the unfairness of the situation, which quickly gained attention online.

Rebecca Roberts, a three-time World’s Strongest Woman, also spoke out on the matter saying, “Transgender women, people born male, should not be competing in the women’s category.” She pointed out that fairness and trust in the sport were compromised and insisted that women’s divisions must remain exclusive to those born female.

In light of this incident, Thompson has been reinstated as the official 2025 Women’s Open champion, while Booker has been removed from all recorded results. The organizers reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that all athletes are placed in categories consistent with their biological sex at birth, fostering an environment that aims for fairness in competition.

This situation reflects ongoing debates in sports regarding gender identity and biological differences, making it essential for organizations to carefully evaluate their policies to maintain equity in competition.
